Guest Post: Know What is a Post Pregnancy Body Makeover from Dr. Douglas Steinbrech

Becoming a mom is something many women dream of, often waiting for two, three or even four decades to finally see their wish come true. But then the day comes when you send your child off to school and head back inside, catching sight of yourself in the mirror as you go.

It is at this moment when many women just like you catch themselves thinking, “What have I done to my body?” Breasts that used to be high and firm are drooping. Bellies that were formerly taut and tight have started to sag. Thighs and butt seem eager to follow suit. Is there any way to have all the joys of motherhood and your pre-pregnancy body too?

The recommended way is the dedicated exercising and nutritious diet which is safest and healthiest method of getting back to Pre-pregnancy shape.

But if for some reason which is usually weak back or other health conditions you cannot do intense exercises, you can still get that dream-stunning-body. How? The solution is what is commonly known as a “Mommy Makeover.” Learn more about this increasingly popular procedure here!

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

The first thing to know about a “mommy makeover” is that no two procedures are ever exactly alike. As the American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains, a mommy makeover is highly customized to your needs and goals.

As such, a mommy makeover can include any of the following procedures as your individual needs and goals dictate:

– Breast lift and/or augmentation.
– Tummy tuck.
– Liposuction (various areas).
– Buttock lift and/or augmentation.
– Vaginal rejuvenation.

What makes a mommy makeover different from other procedures is that the procedures you select are typically done all at one time. This is done to minimize recovery time so you can quickly get back to being a mom!

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

There are very few reasons why you wouldn’t be a good candidate for a mommy makeover.

Here are just a handful of reasons why your surgeon may advise postponing your mommy makeover procedure:

– You are still breastfeeding.
– You are not sure you are finished having children.
– You have just begun an intensive weight loss program.
– You are currently taking medications for a blood disorder (such as blood thinners).
– Your skin produces keloid scarring.
– You are a heavy smoker or drinker and are not willing to cut back before, during and after your procedure to allow your body to heal.
– You are currently in treatment for a serious immune system-related health issue.
– You have a known allergy to general anesthesia.

So long as none of the above applies to you, you are likely a great candidate to have a mommy makeover!

How Should I Prepare for My Consultation?

The initial consultation is your time to share your goals, ask questions and learn more about your options for a mommy makeover procedure.

During your consultation, your surgeon will meet with you one-to-one. The consultation will begin with taking your personal and family medical history. The consultation will also include an examination. Here, your surgeon may take photos and make notes about what is to be done in targeted areas.

You are also welcome to bring in photos if this helps you describe your appearance goals. You will learn about how to prepare for your mommy makeover, what to expect on the day of surgery and during recovery and options for financing, if desired.

Before you leave the surgeon’s office, you may also schedule your mommy makeover procedure date if you wish.

Are There Any Risks?

As with any surgical procedure, there is always a slight risk of infection, bleeding, scarring, poor healing at the wound site(s) and asymmetrical results.

If you have questions or concerns about any potential risks, your surgeon can talk with you more about these during your individual mommy makeover consultation.

What Is a Mommy Makeover Procedure Like?

On the day of your procedure, you will need to have someone drive you to and from the surgical site. Plan to arrive early at your scheduled site.

You will receive general anesthesia to ensure your total comfort during the procedure. The length of your surgery will depend on what you are having done. Typically, you are able to go home the same day as your surgery.

Before you depart for home, you will be given detailed instructions for recovery, including any pain management needs you may have.

What Is Recovery from a Mommy Makeover Like?

Typically, patients do experience some discomfort following the mommy makeover procedure. This is mainly due to healing incisions and localized swelling. Where and how much pain you feel will depend on what areas received treatment.

You will receive prescriptions in advance that you can fill and use to manage any pain you may feel. You can also call your doctor’s office at any time if you have any concerns or questions.

How Long Before I See the Results?

While you will notice some changes right away, it can take some time for the body to completely heal after a surgical procedure.

So while most patients who work outside the home feel ready to return to work within 14 days of the procedure, it may take up to six weeks before all of the swelling has receded and you can really see the full impact of your mommy makeover.
