Female Infertility: Major Causes of the Problem

Infertility is the incapability of getting pregnant. The diagnosis on a couple is considered unsuccessful if the female partner is not able to get pregnant after unprotected intercourse of one full year. Every 1 out of 7 couples in the world is facing this problem.
It is generally thought of as the sole problem of the woman but every third case is due to male infertility. However, we are only going to discuss the causes of infertility in females in this post.

General Causes of Infertility in Women

Conditions which generally affect the chances of getting pregnant are –


This disorder is found in around 6-10% women in the world. In Endometriosis, the tissues, which should line the uterus, grow out of it. These tissues can be found on ovaries or fallopian tubes. Due to this, menstrual irregularities, infertility and pain may cause.

Damaged Fallopian Tubes

Fallopian tubes are the structures which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Pelvic Infections, surgery or even endometriosis (see above) may damage these cells. So, when ovary produces eggs, they are incapable reaching the uterus, where the baby is formed.

Hormonal Disorders

The pregnancy may not be causing because the usual hormonal changes, which are required in the ovulation (described below) or other related processes. The release of eggs, thickening of the uterus linings are the main among such changes.

Uterus Related Conditions

You may have the conditions like polyps and fibroids. These conditions refer to the problems where more than necessary cells are growing in the uterus lining or endometrium. It may interfere the pregnancy.

Ovulation Problems

The complete absence or lack ovulation is one of the main causes of infertility in women. These ovulatory problems can disturb or completely vanish the menstrual cycle. The failed ovulation finally results in the inability to conceive the pregnancy.

Issues Related to the Cervical

In some cases, the sperms may be passing through the cervical canal. It does not let them meet with the eggs, causing infertility as the result.

A Combined Cause

Sometimes, a combination of these causes, occurring completely or partial in a lady, do not let the baby develop inside a woman.

Unidentifiable Reasons

The exact causes in some couples cannot be determined due to complexity or unawareness of their existence. Around 20-22% of cases are caused due to unknown or unexplained reasons.

Some Other Factors Which May Result in Infertility

Not only the hormonal or medical factors are the causes of infertility, there are some other factors too which may affect the productivity. Here are those factors –
• The age plays an important role in female fertility. After the age of 35-40, the productivity decreases sharply. After menopause, it is very difficult to expect a baby.
• Excessive intake of alcohol, smoking, over stressed mind, overweight or under weighted body are the lifestyle issues which can decrease your chances of getting pregnant.
• Previous ectopic pregnancy or miscarriages are some of the gynaecological problems which increase the chances f infertile female organism.
• Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS may lead to this problem. Due to PCOS, the large ovaries and small cysts are causes. These syndromes may be genetic or developed due to environmental factors.
• Diabetes, epilepsy, and thyroid and bowel diseases are a few medical conditions which may lead to infertility.
There are many tests like HSG i.e. HysteroSalpingoGraphy and Laparoscopy which can determine the problem quickly to start the treatment at its earliest. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is generally used in treating unexplained infertility while other problems are treated with different medication methods.
As infertility in women is not an uncured problem, doctors may definitely suggest the best ways for recovering this inefficiency.
