How to Remove the Pesticides from My Produce?

The fruits and vegetables, being marketed, contain some degrees of pesticides. These micro-organisms vary in type, according to the product you have purchased. It cannot be expected that the bought eatables are cent per cent pure, germ-free and healthy.
The farmers, growing the green products are using the heavy amount of chemicals to serve the market with the mass quantity. These pesticides may kill the insects and help farmers to keep their crops healthy but for human beings, it in harmful in all ways.
These near-perfect looking fruits and vegetables can cause health risks to human, especially to the kids. This made me write about the ways to remove the pesticides easily from the fruits and vegetables. If you want to learn these effective and easy tricks, read ahead!

Wash the food in a right way

Cold washing takes the 70%-80% of pesticide residues away. The fruits like apples, grapes, peaches, guava, mangoes, plums and pears and fruity vegetables like tomatoes and brinjal can be disinfected using this method. Make sure you are washing them two to three times for effective results.
Here are the 10 best ways to Clean the Produce. It’s pretty easy!

Scrub it!

Keep a plastic made brush/scrubber as shown in picture only for use of cleaning the vegetables like Potatoes, Beet Roots, Cucumber i.e. the vegetables which have thick skin.

Scrubbing is especially useful when you want to use these vegetables without peeling. E.g. Baked Potato.

The White Vinegar Trick

Vinegar is most commonly recommended by experts to clean the produce.

Keep the food in vinegar-water solution, containing 4 parts of water and 1 part of vinegar. After 15 minutes, take them out and wash with clean cold water. You can observe the colour change due to absorption of toxic elements if they are present in the food.
It will be better if you are using organic white vinegar for this purpose. The porous and fragile foods should not be treated with this solution, as they may absorb the taste and smell of vinegar. You can use this method of cleaning for Berries.

This is probably the safest and most easy way of making the food healthy. Most of the dirt and germs reside in the outermost part of the fruits or vegetables. Peeling off the outer skin will, therefore, solve the problem and you will be able to present the actually healthy food to your family.

Turmeric Touch

Turmeric is a well-known anti-inflammatory agent and an antioxidant due to the presence of Curcumin. Studies say that turmeric may kill bacteria and viruses.
You can use 2-3 pinches of turmeric in warm water to wash the leafy greens. It will kill the elements with can affect your health adversely.

The Sea Salt Effect

Keep the salt density 2% while preparing a salt-water solution. Soak the food for ten minutes in the solution. Finally, wash it with clean water before ingestion.

Home Prepared Spray

It is super easy to prepare a pesticide removing spray with natural ingredients. Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice and two teaspoons of baking soda in a cup of water. Fill it in a sprayer bottle and it is ready!
Spray it on the food items and leave for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse with clean water to get healthy produce.

Scrub with Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda on the eatables featuring hard skin. Rub gently to make it work. Finally, wash with water to get the non-toxic food.

This method works well for the vegetables, which are cooked at high temperatures. It is not suitable for the fruits.
Add the food to be cleaned to hot (boiled) water and leave it for some time. When water became lukewarm, take the food out o solution. It will clear the germs and pesticides from the vegetables efficiently.
NOTE: The vegetables which will release the nutrients in hot water should not be cleaned in this way. The vegetables with thick skin and when you want to use them with skin. I prefer this method for salads (Cucumber/Tomatoes/Beetroot) where I don’t want to peel off the produce to keep the fibres in salad

Use Apple Scrap Vinegar

The organic apple scrap vinegar can be used in the similar way as white vinegar is used. The benefit of using this flavour of vinegar is – it will not worsen the taste and smell for the porous foods.

Lemon/Citric Acid Wash

This solution can be used to wash all veggies and fruits. Mix lemon juice and water and let the food soak the solution. Wash with water to get the desired harmless foodstuff.

How to Clean the Mushrooms?

You might have heard Do not soak the mushrooms as the inner part absorbs the water and spoils them faster or do not clean them under running water, but that is not true as just wiping them with a wet/dry towel is not going to remove the soil and dirt on the mushrooms.

This is a good and quick way to clean the mushrooms
1. Take a big bowl full of water (I usually take luke warm water) just add the mushrooms to the water.
2. Gently rub the mushrooms the water will do the job to dissolve the soil in it so you don’t really need more than gentle touch.
3. You can also clean them under running water in case of Shiitake, holding the umbrella towards the water
4. Spread the mushrooms on dry cloth and wipe them by light patting.
5. I keep the stems but just cut the very end of it as this bottom is spongy and might have absorbed the dirty water while we wash them
6. Do not store the washed mushrooms. Wash them just before using them (I wash and immediately cut and use)
7. If you want to store the mushrooms then keep them in a paper bag in refrigerator.

How to Wash Green Leafy Vegetables and Broccoli?

After trying and studying many ways I have found this way is best of all:
1. Take a big bowl of luke warm water (Big enough to let the whole vegetable, broccoli sprouts dip in it properly)
2. Add a teaspoon of organic turmeric
3. Wash the green vegetables gently in running water without rubbing them.
4. Soak the vegetables in turmeric water for 5-10 mins (e.g. spinach 5 mins, broccoli 10 mins)
5. Take out the vegetables and pat dry with clean cloth.

Tip for Washing Fruits with Rinds

When you wash fruits with rinds like pineapple, orange, melons, carrots, make sure you wash and dry your hands after washing these fruits and before cutting/peeling them.

How to clean the Grapes? Tricky isn’t it?

This Sea Salt way is effective and safe method to clean the grapes. Grapes are bit tricky as most people are not comfortable seeing the white coat on grapes. But it is the wax created naturally by this fruit to keep the moisture locked. Though it looks like some chemical. But surely the chemicals sprayed on the fruit might be getting coated over the wax.
Remove the grapes from the stem. Sprinkle one table spoon of sea salt (and Baking soda http://naturesnurtureblog.com/how-to-wash-grapes-the-right-way/ as suggested by some experts). Rub the salt on grapes lightly and then wash it.

How to Clean Meat/Fish?

Meat and Fish are more prone to develop microbes.
1. Wash the meat and fish under running water In case of fish scrub the skin of fish with the plastic net scrubber, cut as you want and wash quickly again.
2. Now in bowl take the meat/fish Apply some sea salts, turmeric and a just a drop of lemon juice keep it for 5-10 mins then wash under running water again.
Do not rub else the soft meat/fish pieces will break.
Notes: 1) Lemon juice and Turmeric together are intense in effects so keep the quantity less.
2) The turmeric will change the taste to a very little extent so don’t add it if you don’t want the little yellowish colour and taste it leaves behind.

Those who hate the fishy smell of fish this trick works perfect:

Most of people use lemon juice or vinegar but even more effective than that is Dried Kokum!
Add a teaspoon of Kokum Juice or simply soak the dry kokum in water and use that water (not directly the whole kokums, whole kokums are very strong and intense in their effects) to washed fish and keep it for 10 mins. Wash it and smell free fish is ready to be cooked!

    Thank you wonderfull,how to clean sliced foods&vegitables.,is there any promblem by using fridge kept foods,vegetables,milk,Hurd,rice,and what about rice cleaning.take care!
