Falooda with Sabja Seeds: Can Pregnant Women Eat it?

Falooda is one mysterious pregnancy food whose consumption is questioned by many pregnant women. Why? Because except 1 ingredient, almost all the ingredients used in making a falooda are said to be safe. Only Artificial Colors used in making Faluda are not healthy for a pregnant woman. How about Falooda Seeds, i.e. Sabja/Tukmaria seeds? Are they safe?

How to Eat Safe Falooda in Pregnancy?

Imagine there’s an empty glass tumbler in front of you. Now, for making falooda we first:

Step [1] Soaking

[Soak falooda Sabja/Tukmaria seeds in cold water for about 15-30 minutes.
Sabja/Tukmaria seeds are to be eaten in a moderate amount by pregnant women. By soaking the Sabja seeds, we awaken the sleeping nutrition of the seed. Sabja/ Tukmaria seeds are rich in iron, Vitamin A, Folate and antioxidants, etc.
With enriched iron chances of getting pregnancy anemia gets reduced.
Vitamin A helps in fetal development.
Folate helps in avoiding birth defects in newborns. It also helps in providing sufficient blood supply to you and your baby.
Sabja Seeds are Unsafe for you when…
From above, as you know falooda seeds help in providing blood supply to the mother. When a pregnant woman consumes an excess or concentrated form of Sabja (sweet basil) seeds, due to increased supply of blood, she may suffer from uterine contraction or miscarriage.
Though high in protein, Sabja seeds are less in calories. Hence, an excess of Sabja seeds consumption can result in weight loss and weakness in pregnant women.
The falooda seeds also help in treating diabetes. But your blood sugar may go down, due to the fibrous Sabja seeds. As a result, you might even pass out.

If you are not sure of about eating falooda seeds, you have two options then:

Option 1- Making Healthy Falooda

Use only one spoonful of Sabja/Tukmaria/Kukumarai/Falooda seeds to fill the amount you can add nuts like unsalted and unroasted pistachios, cashew nuts, walnuts, and almonds. Or you can add dry fruits like figs, dates, and dried unsweetened cranberries, etc. All these are said to have a vital role in a pregnant women’s diet.

Option 2- Making Healthy Falooda

Or else you could sprinkle some Chia seeds for making your pregnancy faloodah. Chia seeds in pregnancy are recommended for baby’s brain development, for making baby body bones strong, and for minimizing your excess weight gain and aches, etc.
Note:
In India, due to the similarity in appearance, many consider Chia and Sabja (Sweet Basil) to be one and same thing. Please note Sabja seeds are Sweet Basil Seeds and are different than Chia seeds (they are native to Maxico). They resemble in looks and are both healthy but have some differences in nutrients contents.

Step [2.] Cooking Vermicelli

Meanwhile, the seeds are getting soaked; cook the rice vermicelli in boiling water.
Why use Rice Vermicelli?
They are thin, gets easily cooked. A better choice than refined flour vermicelli noodles. At the top of this, rice can easily be digested.
When the vermicelli gets cooked, let it stay inside the boiling water for about 5 minutes. Strain out the hot water and immediately pour cold water over it.

Step [3] Boiling Milk

Now boil milk and sugar together for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally. After 30-40 minutes refrigerate it for about 1 hour.

Step [4] Add Remaining Ingredients

After completion of 1 hour inside the tumbler, add a spoonful of Chia/Sweet Basil seeds. Next, add boiled rice vermicelli and chilled sugar milk into it. If you want, you could flavor your falooda milk with rose squash (syrup) or maple syrup.

Healthy Ice Cream Sorbet Recipe for Pregnancy Cravings

Here’s how you can make it…
Step 1
Take a fruit of your choice, like watermelon, pineapple, mango, strawberry, kiwi, and melon, etc., cut them into small chunks and freeze it for 1-2 hours.
Step 2
You can set the freezer at its highest temperature for quick freezing. Then take frozen fruit chunks and blend it with cold water and sweetened condensed milk like that of Milkmaid and Nestle, etc. (Homemade options are healthier)
Condensed milk is prepared by rigorously boiling milk, hence condensed milk are pasteurized and are safe for pregnant women. Falooda is not a thing to be eaten daily, so a little of condensed milk for making falooda’s ice cream, poses no threat.
TIP:
We suggested you to use condensed milk if you like your ice cream to be creamy. You can skip using condensed milk and in its place along with cold water, you can use powdered sugar as per your taste.
Step 3)
The ratio of Fruit Chunks and Condensed Milk/Cold water should be= 5:1/2. This means for 5 cups of frozen fruit chunks you should use 1/2 cup of cold water/condensed milk.
But when you are using a sweetened condensed milk, there’s no need to add sugar in it.
Step 4) Now blend everything in a blender.
TIP:
Use the blender at its maximum high speed, blend little for 2-3 minutes. Otherwise, the frozen fruits would melt.
Step 5) Empty the mixture into a plastic container or bowl. Increase your freezer’s temperature, set it at its maximum temperature.
Keep the plastic bowl inside your refrigerator’s freezer for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes scoop out the fruit ice cream sorbet and drop it on your falooda.
And your Falooda’s done!

Why not buy readymade Falooda mixes?

You will find many ready-to-make, falooda making packets in the markets. Don’t get tempted to buy them as they contain an excess amount of artificial preservatives and strong food colors that could be unhealthy for your baby.
