Hemorrhoids are very common and harmless to the pregnant women but the discomfort caused by them deserves all the hatred. It mostly appears in the mid-second or third semester of pregnancy.

What is Hemorrhoids/Piles?

Hemorrhoids, aka piles are the varicose veins in rectal area, caused by swelling of blood vessels. Growing size of uterus puts extra pressure on the pelvic veins and inferior vena cava during pregnancy. Additionally, increase in a hormone named progesterone allows your veins to relax and swell more easily, causing hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are mainly of two types internal & external. Internal hemorrhoids are painless or little bleeding may occur. While these internal hemorrhoids may protrude to external ones, which is a severe condition where bleeding, itching, swelling, rectal discomfort and painful bowel movement occur.

Why it Hits You in Pregnancy?

Why in pregnancy? Are other discomforts less for me? Well, here is the answer!

It is common in pregnancy as during pregnancy abdomen size increases which eventually. It increases pressure in the abdomen and may cause enlargement of veins in the anus or lower rectum.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

• Swollen veins in rectal part
• Rectal bleeding
• Painful bowel movement
• Bulginess or swelling
• Itching and irritation in rectal area
• Rectal Discomfort

What Causes Hemorrhoids

Increase in abdomen pressure

The main cause of hemorrhoids in pregnant women is the increase in abdomen size (as already discussed above), which eventually increases pressure in the abdomen and may cause enlargement of veins in the anus or lower rectum.

Deficiency of Fiber Rich Diets

Lack of fibers in the diet (green vegetables, fruits) causes hemorrhoids. Fiber Improve digestive problems and helps in constipation. Hence fiber intake is important.

Stretching

Doing physical exercise or lifting things may cause straining and thereby induces the pile issue.

Squatting

Squatting is very good exercise for pregnant women as it strengthens lower half but at same time the overall position and movement of the body in squatting is piles-inducing. Especially in last trimester the chances of piles are higher if extensive squatting is done.

Recurrent Constipation

During pregnancy women are prone to constipation problems, due to which strain occurs & causes hemorrhoids. Force full defecation is also a reason of hemorrhoids

Standing for a Long Time

Usually in pregnancy pressure over abdomen increases, which increases pressure over the rectal part. It causes swelling of veins. So, avoid sitting or standing for a long time.

Less Fluid Intake

Decreased in fluid intake may cause constipation. My advice will be – Drink plenty of water, fluids, and juices it will help in your bowel movement.

Devoid of Cleanliness

Poor bathroom habits are one of the main reasons behind hemorrhoids. During pregnancy cleanliness of private parts is much needed.

Treatments for Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy are not a chronic condition. It usually improves after the baby’s birth, so it is not that serious problem except in some cases. Treatments are simple to make things better for you. Here are such treatments listed –

• Increase Intake of fiber rich foods. It will improve bowel movement as well as constipation. Flavanoids (grapes, tomato, apple blueberry, watermelon) are also active against hemorrhoids.

• Do regular exercises. It will improve your muscle tone. For pregnant women, kegel exercise is best as it strengthens pelvic muscle, and cause circulation of blood over pelvic region.

• Hydrotherapy – It is a kind of therapy in which water is used for the treatment of pain. You can simply deploy it at home. Soak your pelvic portion into the warm water do this 3,4 times a day or apply ice packs or cold water at the affected site it will decrease swelling.

• You can use herbal creams and ointments externally, which are safe for pregnant women. (Doctor’s Consultation is must)

• Intake of water is must, drink at least 6 or 8 glass of water a day (You must have got it from the “causes” section – Remove the reason and cure it. As simple as that!).

• Take sitz bath. It will minimize the pain and you will feel comfortable.

• Do not put too much pressure while pooping it may harm you rectal veins or cause bleeding.

• Use washroom when you feel urge because not going to the washroom when needed, may cause hardening of stools.

• Always use wipes, instead of tissue as they are soft. In hemorrhoid conditions, rectal portion becomes sensitive because of bulging or swelling to that area. Using dry tissue paper may cause bleeding.

• Cleanliness of rectal area is must; avoid unnecessary time in the bathroom. Wash with warm water & do not use soap as it may contain irritants.

Hemorrhoids After The Baby Birth

Hemorrhoids caused during pregnancy may or may not resolve soon after baby’s birth. In most of the cases, painless enlarged veins remain there even after the delivery, unless removed by surgery.
